Yesterday at the Complex office...

Complex: Everyone’s been waiting on this video. Can you take us through the making of it?

Drake: Yeah. The video is directed by Kanye West. Basically we decided, as opposed to taking ourselves super serious, we just wanted to have some fun with it. Myself, being a young man, a young single man at that, I kind of wanted to be real about the way I function with women at this current point in my life. Which is, I don’t have one woman that I call my girl. There’s different girls in my life that play different roles and I see at different times, but collectively they kind of make up the roster of happiness for me [Laughs].

Complex: Understandable. So what’s the concept?

Drake: The concept of the video is, I’m a coach at a high school and the girls of my life are all on my high school basketball team. Throughout the video you see us prepping for this big championship game, and my team ends up losing. You see the looks on their faces at the end of the video, but the moral of the story, I guess, is win or lose, you can still be the best to somebody. When women see the video and see all the breast and ass, hopefully they don’t take offense. Hopefully they see the real meaning.

see i knew i was right! i didnt take offense at all i loved the video because it was played on.. like word play but in this case i guess it would be called video play?... but i seen where it was going and i like it alot! you have to relate the meaaning of the song to the concept of the video and i though kanye did a great job... drake..... take that "d" ha ha ha ha loved it!

I saw where the video was going a lot of people did. But, the visual just seemed to cover up the whole I concept.

Eliza~Love said...

Ok, that definitely cleared it up ^_~ mad confusion there. You know for slow people like myself. lol Anyway... I didn't take offense to anything actually just confused, did quite grasp the concept of it. Like I said before it was just something I didn't expect. Who knows, who knows, this video was definitely a attention grabber that's for sure.

Mad love for yall~

I still feel that this video should have been strictly for the ladies... I am disappointed that we didn't get to see more of Drake since this was the first official video.

Sorry, I am a huge fan of Drake and have even before SFG was even released; I am disappointed by this video. Yes, he may have tried to show where he is at in his life but there is no correlation btwn the video and the song!!! Kanye did a really bad job and Drake was crazy for agreeing to it. The audience that this song reaches are mostly females, and most women dont appreciate the titties bouncing in out face. There isn't even an empty pizza box showing that they could "share the last slice". I wont pretend I like a video just because I like an artist. Stan, I am not.
Btwn this and the BET awards, it hasnt been a good week for Drizzy. He has to come better!!

I am so mad still by this video. I am 23 years old to and honestly have fears of settling down as well, but I don't have multiple men who fulfill certain needs in my life. I date but I don't mess with people's emotions. If I am involved with a person sexually their usually comes a commitment in the mix sooner than later. This video was terrible and disgusting and i hate to state that cause I adore not only your music but the man behind it. I hope to expect great things for you in the future and pray your next videos are not directed by Kanye's private parts. Hell your music will save hip hop don't forget that Aubrey. xoxo Ebony

I understood the concept and the analogy when I first saw the video and I still stand behind what I said yesterday. The video isn't right for the song and it isn't what I think of when I think of Drake. I was hoping for something more like Girls Girls Girls, not a miniature Tip Drill.

Ehh. :/

Thanks for clearing up the BET debacle though. I was pretty sure it had to do with BET and their poor production skills. TV One >>> BET

Unknown said...

You keep making videos like this and you're gonna end up on an episode of TVOne's Unsung.

I'm gonna pretend like I did not see this video, because its making me not like the song.

And yes, I am offended, disappointed, and disgusted.

For a man who constantly says in interviews that he likes women, you bombarded us with a bunch of women in whoresq, cheesy basketball outfits with breast bouncing everywhere. And granted that is nothing new in hip-hop, but this was just too much.

I'm not asking you to be a feminist or do anything different than the next rapper, but I know you know better...

I'm so disgusted, I called live nation to get a refund on my tickets to your concert this summer. Unfortunately they won't give me back my money, so ill see you in concord, ca.

^ Sorry, its opinions. People can say what they want. Not everyone is going to like and not everyone is going to hate.

But, Drake's not done. He will (better) have way better videos than this.

I appreciate the video for what it is, that it's pleasing to the eyes and ears of course! But I would expect more...I just don't see the corelation between the song and the video, with so much creativity behind the music I would hope to see the same in the video...but it's understandable sex sales & you definitely can't please everyone. As long as the music knocks I'm all for Drake! Also in regards to the torn ACL...crucial tore both of mine not the business, when the cold weather comes around bengay is the best!

Unknown said...

now reading what the concept is about i like it..at first i was like concept is outta wack but reading what he says i get it...they wanted to have fun with it, so u really cnt knock that..with that being said no offense was taken with the boobies...

meganmuse said...

Well i'm glad he gave a well thought out response to the whole B.E.T debacle b/c that had me feeling some kinda way :/. As for the video, most ppl have already all wanted to. The only bright side is at least i know something new about drake. He's GOT to be a titay man, or would that be kanye? See I cant tell lol and that's part of the problem. This whole vid looks like some BS Mr. West would have put out on his first album.

Unknown said...

Drake and Kanye have all of the women going crazy with this video...in a good and bad way. Either you're the type of woman that can look at the humor of the video, not take it so seriously and can point out a few dudes you know personally that have the same mentality ,or you can be the type of woman that sees and wants Drake to be perfect at all times. Since I don't know Drake I can't say, "He is the creme de la creme of guys out there", he might be, but don't knock him for trying to show his fans a true side of himself in a humorous and metaphoric way. If he had one principal(lead) girl in the video and it showed the relationship between a boy/girlfriend, it would not show the way he lives his life at this moment in time. And to be honest all of you saying the images of women in this video were "disgusting" would be the same ones hating on the girl that got to play his GF if the video was a romantic lovestory.

If this is the direction Drake's gonna go in...I'm done. He's supposed to respect women and there's np spin anyone can put on this to pretend like it's "funny" or creative.
The vid was horrid - both concept and production. Please don't let Kanye play u out, be YOURSELF. Do YOU!
OVO I strongly suggest a REMAKE.

egoins23 said...

ps. To Kennedy's response, I think all your females fans would have loved to see a lead girl in your video for this song but thats not you or your lifestyle. I guess some of us were expecting too much from you and for that I am sorry for :(

after reading the article ; i mean it's a nice thought but for the video of a song that is huge for drake's image i think it should have been different, but i do understand it more now

okay i truly love Drake & yes he is Jimmy Brooks from Degrassi.

i get the concept of him being a coach and what not bcos of some of the lyrics to the song..but this should have been way better. with Kanye producing this video it had way better expectations . & i know Drake is used to playing the role of a coach since in Degrassi after he was handicapped he was a coach for a boy and girl team. but seriously there are more boobs bouncing around then there is Drake in this video. whats up w. that?

people are forgetting that this isn't even a song from a CD to go blow all this money on ...its a song from his mix tape, but with Kanye (having lots of $$) Producing it there were bigger expectations. Most of Kanye's music videos are very well produced and creative. People will argue that this video served no purpose. BUT what most people don't know is that this video serves as a metaphor.

"I'm a coach of a high school basketball team. As a young man, I'm sorta not really i guess ready to commit to one person. So as young men who aren't ready to commit, we have what may appear like, a roster of women that we talk to. I happen to be coaching my roster of women, which actually happens to be the high school basketball team. And no matter how bad they play, to me they're the best. So its a metaphor that you're the best that Ive ever had."
-Drake
His Own Words..

Overall i think the video was a bit corny but had some funny parts to it. AND i also would like to add that i respect Drake for showing a true side of himself in a humorous and metaphoric way.

People expect way too much from entertainers. People in the entertainment world are either more messed up or about the same as the average person. Drake is an average guy that does what any guy would do in his position. Any guy that denies this is either lying or he is not human. You never know what you would do until you are tested in that situation. To all women offended Drake=Human, Not Drake=God, He makes mistakes, has flaws, and probably does things you don't like. Most r&b artists are bad with relationships but it makes their music great. But what if people could examine your life, I bet You wouldn't seem perfect either. The video wasn't that good, but videos don't get that much play anymore anyway. No Trl. Just 106 & park which age demographic is mostly 18 & under. So could some of you people live in the real world.

I love the video! I feel like people are ridiculous for not looking into the concept. It's not about the boobs and ass displayed in the music video (though they are a great asset)...It's so creative and displays the originality of his music/who he is.

BTW check out the background on my twitter! Hahahaha it's of Drake. Super funny. (Sorry, had to do it)

Richey Rhymes said...

I knew where the video was being takin when I first watched it. I mean, you had to think it was gonna be out the box dealing with Kanye. But I loved the video cause it wasn't the traditional rapper video.

About the deal...i first read that you was signing to Young Money/Cash Money and I thought, okay this is what I expected so let's see how many people change their opinions on you now. Just as I suspected people were saying that since you signed that deal, your album wasn't gonna come out now due to the fact your with Cash Money/Young Money and Wayne is the Powerhouse. But since I read the Complex interview I knew you was making the move. What better way to go than to doing something that you can prove people wrong with.

Good luck bro. It's GO TIME!

To be honest the BET awards made you look like a pedophile that hangs with junkies (Lil Wayne) and to top it off the video is trash. You need to put out a mixtape or catch a case or something crazy to take the spotlight off this horrible last couple of days for you.

Nico ♥ said...

Carnage45?? You on some otha shit. He didnt look like on pedo, and he did just fine considering. And just incase you didnt know he got Three mixtapes out, check em out.
I see the concept in the Video now that i read drakes meaning... i guess. Its his music and he interpretative it the way he sees fit. Period. The some is still a bummer, erbody on that shit now!

i personally hated the vid. i mean i love u and i love the song but i think the video jus messed it all up. im not offended by the stuff that was in the video but putting things like that in your videos jus limits your audience cause people will only watch it for the girls jumping around or they won't watch it because of the girls jumping around then that jus takes away from the sng. now that you xplained y u did it i get the meaning of it but before that i didnt and i dont think im the only 1 lol. idk but maybe your spending too much tym wid certain ppl *cough*lil wayne*cough* lol. but hey i still love you :D

Message for Oliver, 40, and Drake.

First off you guys have a crazy synergistic team. Whatever it is - PRESERVE it. This is it right here - that's the family that everyone seeks in their careers. I would be lying if I said that I am not addicted to your sound. I am itching for future releases from you guys. I am excited for music again.

Business has brought me to LA but I was raised in Ottawa and Toronto - grew up around our talented yet "no voice" hip hop nation. I've been in the US for 10 years now. With family and best friends in Canada, I'm out there at least 1-2x a year. You guys are just like the people I grew up with so it brings back memories of growing up. I am 100% Canadian and have been repping it out here but finally I won't be alone now. I am ready for you guys to have a huge impact on the hip-hop scene that hasn't had much life since the 90's (generalizing ofcourse).

If you continue doing what you're doing - you will make history in not only Canadian culture but the entire world of hip-hop, and at the same time making serious cash deals. Best of all worlds.

I hope you guys the best and I'll be your unofficial street team out here in LA and Orange County. If you guys need something done - holler. I got you.

I have major faith in you guys. Looking forward to 2010. I'm glad I found your blog - I will be keeping up with it on my phone's RSS feed. Let's GO!

- Swat Khan

Hey Drake!!! Just wanted 2 let u know dat I love ya!! And I understand why you didn't stand up while you were performing, You were hurt, so I'm just happy you performed.Unfortunantly I hurt my leg the next day playing tennis, so I feel your pain...Even though I appreciate you explaining the Best I Ever Had video, I kinda still expected U 2 only tell 1 girl they were your best, but okay I guess. And when I saw all them girls asses in my face and you 2 the side, I kinda thought that this was the video for "Ms. New Booty" by Collipark lol... Anyway I can't wait til you relase another hit single. Keep on doing what u do baby!!

you gotta see the video to get the concept of the video and all the girls in the video not drake its kanye freaky ass i mean look at his videos flashing lights, the girl in the good life video, workout plan, and to top it he dates a stripper amber rose so he in touch with his freaky side but he makes good ass music and drake the future of music not just hiphop because he can genre cross

Dude this "video"...

I think the general sentiment is correct: this video sucked but we still have high hopes for you. You're incredibly talented and could do way better. It's like when your kid flunks a test you know they should have aced but got caught up with trying to kick it with the cool kids. I mean, it must give you pause to think about the fact everybody thinks (or at least a great deal of ppl think) kw played you the fuck out. I'm not going to front like I've been up on you for hella long but what I did know is that you were a breath of freash air and now you're seeming more and more like the same old.

You can def come back from this but I think you should heed these reactions and reflect.

All the best to you!
