I’m not sure that you know exactly what my life has felt like; what I’ve been put through and what I’ve been cursed with. I’m not sure I know exactly what your life feels like; what you’ve been blessed with and how it helps you get by.
Last Saturday I spoke about some parts of my life to a crowd of a hundred or so people at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Tears flowed, children were walked out and eyes furrowed as my voice cracked with nerves and I put my heart in the air. I feared the speaking more than I feared what I was saying, but when you live how I’ve lived it’s not hard to talk about it because it’s felt normal your whole life.
Afterward I realized the affect it had on so many people; people who I’ve known for plenty of years who had no clue what even a small fraction of my life felt like, what I’ve been put through and what I’d been cursed with. These people are my friends. They’re not strangers who frequent my blog and follow me on twitter but don’t know my phone number. They were my friends. And they didn’t know some of the things that have happened to me. That’s not their fault. But what’s been so normal to me and the story of my life was clearly not something most people go through.
My eyes have been opened up to the importance of the things I’ve experienced and how it can relate to other people. In the near future I will continue to speak in the same types of forums that I did on Saturday in hopes that people can connect, feel blessed, feel alive or feel hope.
Be grateful, people. Life is too short. We need each other.
